2024 FEDERAL ELECTION FILING DEADLINES

If you are going to run for FEDERAL office (US House/Congress), US Senate, or President, you must make sure you are eligible to run. You will need to verify the filing dates and criteria with your state as they may change due to redistricting. You will sometimes need to get a large number of signatures from registered voters in the district where you wish to run and/or you may need to pay filing fees to the government and/or pay fees to the Republican or Democratic party, if you wish to run as a Republican or Democrat.

Please understand what all the deadlines, filing requirements and fees are. In some states, filing fees to run for congress can be more than $10,000.00. In some states there is no filing fee. Fees and deadlines vary from state to state.

Remember, these are FEDERAL office filing deadlines which is not always the same as municipal or state filing deadlines. Check with your county for more info on those races!

Do not wait until the last minute to put your campaign together. It should be ready to roll out BEFORE you file! And remember, if you are running for FEDERAL office, there is NO requirement that you have to live in the district where you are running. You don’t even need to live in the same state to run, however, if you win your election, you are required to become a resident of that state (not district). Election Day Strategies has many services to help with any stage of your campaign and we also have low monthly rates for clients on a monthly management agreement. What is Super Tuesday? Super Tuesday is the date when many states have their Presidential primaries, caucuses and conventions. In 2024, Tuesday, March 5th is Super Tuesday.

What is a Primary? That is the day when voters vote for the candidate of their choice to advance to the general election (or runoff). Many states have several primaries which can include one for municipal races, one for presidential races and one for all other races. This is why it is important to candidates to find out when their primary is.

What is a Caucus? In limited states, rather than an open primary, they have a caucus which is when there is a meeting of people from a particular party to decide who their candidate will be.

What is a Closed Primary? Those happen in states where the political parties have decided that the only people who can vote in their primary are voters specifically registered to that party. For example, only registered Republicans can vote in a Republican primary.
